Toraja Land Tours - Sulawesi
Tana Toraja is quite simply unique. A cultural island, hemmed in by
mountains on all sides, the Toraja prove there is life after death
with their elaborate ceremonies. Take the beauty of Bali, the houses
of the Bataks in Sumatra and the megalithic cultures of Sumba and
you’re still not even close. Cave graves, hanging graves, tau tau
(life-sized wooden effigies) of the dead and buffalo carnage every
summer; it’s macabre but mesmerizing. This is a world unto itself.
On the burial ceremony, they leave the corpse inside a cave. Many
visitor would surprise of not smelling any strong odor that usually
comes with a corpse. Oral history says that in the old days, the
deceased would be "ordered" by a shaman to walk by him or herself to
the cave. It was a zombie-like procession. Unfortunately no one can
witness this kind of ritual today. The most
spectacular of Torajan rituals are the funerals. For Torajan, a
funeral is the single most important ceremony in the life cycle. It
is based on a strong belief that the soul of the deceased travels to
the land of the south and in this land of eternity, he will need all
the requisites of everyday life in the hereafter just like when he
was alive in this world. Funeral ceremonies are festival lasting as
long as ten days with much feasting and entertainment. Animal
sacrifices are made to ensure eternal life in the afterlife and to
safeguard the descendants.

Itinerary
Day 01; Arrival in Makassar Airport - Drive to Tana Toraja
Upon arrival in Hasanuddin airport (Depart Bali(DPS) at 06:55 -
Arrived Makassar (UPG) 08:15 - Flight Number GA 620), Ujung Pandang,
Makassar, meet with our guide and drive 8 hours to Tana Toraja. On
the way, passing through the buginese village with typical wooden
houses. Lunch will be serve at local seaofood restaurant in
Pare-pare. Then drive to Battukabobong to see the wonderful
landscape of Mount Battukabobong and enjoy the great green view
while having hot drink and snacks. Arrived at Rante Pao, Tana Toraja
in the afternoon, check in at Hotel. free time at your own leisure.

Day 02. Full Day Tana Toraja Tour
Breakfast at Hotel, visit the stone hanging grave of Lemo with its
Tau-Tau effigies, Kambira where we can find the peculiar baby graves
in the trees, Nanggala and Siguntuk, local Torajan villages famous
for their old Tongkonan houses and rice barns and explore the
architecture of Tongkonan houses in Ketekesu village and Londa,
which is a natural grave with entombed deceased. Lunch will be
served at a local restaurant in Rantepao. Afternoon back to hotel.

Day 03. Full Day Tana Toraja Tour
After breakfast, visit Pallawa and Sa’dan, local Torajan villages
famous as the center of wood carving, Bori, where we can see the
ancient stone megaliths and Marante, local Torajan village with
their big Tongkonans and old rice barns. Lunch will be served at a
local restaurant in Rantepao. Afternoon back to Hotel.

Day 04. Full Day Tana Toraja Tour
Enjoy breakfast at Hotel, drive to the mountains and visit Tinombayo
where we can enjoy the spectacular view of the megalith stones
spread over the extensive rice fields, to a burial cave of Lokomata,
trip to Batutumonga where we will a have short trekking, enjoy the
beautiful scenery, its a unique Torajan life style and trekking
along rice terraces, steep hills with huges bamboos and spectacular
views. Lunch will be served close to the top of the mountain. Back
to Rantepao in the afternoon and resting and stay overnight at
Hotel. (B, L)

Day 05. Drive to Makassar - Transfer to Airport for your next flight
Breakfast, then drive to Makassar with the same road, stop at Pare
Pare for having lunch, afternoon arrived in Makassar airport (UPG)
at 18:00 - Arrived Denpasar (DPS) at 19:20 - Flight Number GA 625).
