Leuser National Park Trek Expedition: Explore Orangutan Sumatra, Elephant and Jungle Camping.
Gunung Leuser National Park is a national park covering 7,927 km²
in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, straddling the border of North
Sumatra and Aceh provinces. The national park, named after 3,381 m
height of Mount Leuser, protects a wide range of ecosystems. An
orangutan sanctuary of Bukit Lawang is located inside the park.
Together with Bukit Barisan Selatan and Kerinci Seblat national
parks it forms a World Heritage Site, Tropical Rainforest Heritage
of Sumatra.
Gunung Leuser National Park is 150 km long, over 100 km wide and is
mostly mountainous. 40% of the park, which is mainly in the north,
is steep, and over 1,500 m. 12% of the Park only, in the lower
southern half, is below 600 meters but for 25 km runs down the
coast. 11 peaks are over 2,700 m and the highest point is Gunung
Leuser, which 3 466 m high.
Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the two remaining habitats for
Sumatran Orangutans (Pongo abelii).3 In 1971, Herman Rijksen
established the Ketambe research station, a specially designated
research area for the orangutan. Other mammals found in the park are
the Sumatran Elephant, Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros, Siamang,
Mainland Serow, Sambar deer, and Leopard Cat.

Itinerary
DAY 01: AIRPORT / MEDAN - BAHOROK
Arrival at Medan airport, met and then depart Medan for 4 hours
drive to Bukit Lawang, check in to lodge, and rest time. About 14.00
hrs, walk to the feeding site, watch the local ranger at work,
calling the orangutan, feed them with fruits and offer some milk.
The feeding time is usually at 15.00 – 16.00 hrs.

Accommodation: Stay at Eco Lodge Bukit Lawang Cottages
DAY 02: BAHOROK - JAMUR BATU BAWAH
We walk from Bukit Lawang to Tangkahan. The walk today will be about
6 hours of moderate walk passing through the riverbank and thick
jungle. Our camp today called Jamur Batu Bawah. The campsite lies
near Sungai Landak River, a river joining the great Bahorok River.

DAY 03: JAMUR BATU BAWAH - ARAS PINANG
After the breakfast near the river, together with our team walk to
Aras Pinang. We will be pasting some small ravines, small rivers,
and riverbank while observing the animals the floral life. Normally,
we can reach the campsite after 6 hours walk. The campsite today
lies on Bahorok riverside.

DAY 04: ARAS PINANG - SUNGAI KERAPU
Gunung Leuser National Park holds an important role for water cycle
in both in Aceh and North Sumatra province. On North Sumatra side,
there is Sungai Wampu, Bahorok River, Sungai Kerapu, and other small
rivers originally come from Gunung Leuser. Today we move from Aras
Pinang to Sungai Kerapu, around 6 hours walk. Sungai Kerapu is a
bigger river than Sungai Landak. It joins Sungai Wampu, which flows
to Medan and northern coast of Sumatra. We may swim, or walk, or
even try our luck to fish in the river.

DAY 05: SUNGAI KERAPU - SUNGAI MUSAM
Breakfast at the campsite, today is the last moderate grade walk we
have. We walk from Sungai Kerapu to Sungai Musam. The walk today is
about 4 - 5 hours. Some of the trails we walk through today are
close to the local peoples oil-palm plantation.

Accommodation: Stay at the temporary camp built near Sungai Musam.
DAY 06: SUNGAI MUSAM - TANGKAHAN
Last walk, last day to stay in the jungle. In the appropriate time,
walk to Tangkahan. We will be walking under the shade of oil-palm
plantation in about 4 - 5 hours. You have a great chance to see the
local workers at work. There are also some local settlements. Around
midday, we arrive at Tangkahan. Rest time after days in the jungle.

DAY 07: EXPLORING TANGKAHAN
After spending extended time learning about the natural wonders of
Sumatra, today we aim to learn and understand how the wildlife and
local villages live side by side. We will enjoy an elephant ride (60
minutes) along and often through the river and see how valuable
these gentle animals are in so many aspects of life in the jungle
and around huge river systems. We will then enjoy a tubing trip down
river and see the jungle from an entirely different aspect, the
river. After walking for a few days it is nice to be pulled along in
the gentle currents of the river. Rest time in the afternoon.

Accommodation: Lodges Mega Inn – basic accommodation.
NOTE: There is no elephant ride every Monday and Thursday at
Tangkahan.
DAY 08: TANGKAHAN - MEDAN - AIRPORT
Final drive for about 6 hours from Tangkahan to Medan airport. We
will be passing through local village, oil-palm and rubber
plantation. The road is quite bumpy. Upon arrival in Medan drop at
the airport and fly to your next destination. End of trip in
Sumatra.
